WEBBY Award for best Cultural Institution website presented to the Prado Museum

WEBBYS AWARDS

Premios WEBBYS al mejor proyecto digital en la categoría Cultural Institutions al Museo del Prado

The Webbys honour excellence in web projects that serve as an international example of leadership on the internet.

Reflecting the immense growth of the internet, the Webby Awards are arranged into seven media categories: Websites; Film & Video; Advertising, Media & PR; Mobile Sites & Apps; Social; Podcasts & Digital Audio; and Games.

The Webby Awards are conferred in two prizes for each category: the Webby Award as selected by the judges, and the People’s Voice Award by popular decision. The members of the International Academy of the Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) choose the nominees for the two prizes in each category and announce the winners after reaching a decision. However, it is the general public who decides who wins the Webby People’s Voice Award. Each year, the Webby People’s Voice Award attracts the interest and votes of millions of people worldwide, with more than 3 million in 2016.

The prestigious Webby Awards were proclaimed “the Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, on par with the Oscars in the world of cinema.

Twenty years after the first award presentation in 1996, the Museo del Prado is the first and only Spanish institution to win a Webby, and the second to be a finalist.

WHY GNOSS?

That year, the Prado Museum website came together with a project carried out fully on the GNOSS platform. The Prado site won the Webby for best Website within the category of Cultural Institutions. They competed for this honour against the Google Cultural Institute Art Project “Performing Arts” and the National Trust’s “Dramatic Views” from the United Kingdom.

Moreover, this accolade was granted twofold: The Prado Museum was the winner of both possible prizes, being selected by the judges and the online public’s top choice. These awards recognise the project’s quality and innovation in all of its aspects and dimensions: Content, Structure and Navigation, Visual Design, Functionality, Interactivity, and Overall Experience.
