Technology is not neutral; an inadequate technological approach or an insufficient set of technologies will determine the outcome. With good data and the right technology, the people and institutions of today can still solve difficult problems and change the world for the better.
It is crucial to recognise the limitations of generative AI when it operates in isolation. Current generative technologies, based on large language models (LLMs), whilst impressive in their ability to produce coherent text, present a severe ontological limitation: they lack any reference to anything external. This means they are unable to handle context for information or generate responses based on logical chains of reasoning, which renders them lacking in "explainability". Knowledge implies a correspondence between what we think and what exists outside our minds.
To develop trustworthy and auditable artificial intelligence, it is essential to establish a theory of mind applicable to machines. This requires a technology commitment grounded in semantics that allows: [1] establishing a link between AI, reality, and objective truth, and [2] incorporating the ability to handle symbolic contexts and meanings.

GNOSS is a Spanish technology company founded in 2002, specialising in the development of Artificial Intelligence technology based on knowledge graphs. Our solution harmoniously combines Knowledge Graphs, Artificial Intelligence, and Automation, enabling explainable reasoning about complex relationships and the inference of new knowledge from pre-existing information. The objective is to automate decision-making processes through the use of structured knowledge.
To achieve this purpose, we have developed GNOSS Semantic AI Platform, a platform that brings together knowledge graphs modelled by ontologies — which organise knowledge in a manner similar to the human brain, establishing explicit connections between different pieces of information — with cognitive and AI services — including machine learning technologies, large language models (LLMs), and generative technologies.
This approach falls within what Gartner terms "Neurosymbolic AI" in its Hype Cycle for Artificial Intelligence 2024, a form of composite AI that combines probabilistic reasoning methods and symbolic systems to create more robust and reliable AI models.
This fusion makes it possible to combine probabilistic models with logic-based techniques (such as knowledge graphs) so that AI systems can represent, reason about, and generalise concepts more effectively.
The result is explainable AI — that is, traceable and reproducible by third parties — as well as auditable, in that it satisfies the requirements of European and national legislation in terms of risk mitigation for the user and guarantees of reliability.
Some applications include advanced recommendation systems, natural language querying systems, medical diagnosis, fraud detection, and similar uses in any domain where it is necessary to reason about complex relationships between different entities in order to make sound decisions.

True technological dependency does not lie in hardware, but in the cognitive biases of the models we use. Accepting an AI that "thinks" in English and translates into Spanish means accepting a silent algorithmic colonisation. At GNOSS, as the vanguard of the Spanish Tech Guerrilla, we reject that subordination. We are leading the construction of the largest corpus of spoken Spanish to date, transforming the intangible heritage of our language into first-rate computational assets.
